What really sells this is just how great the performances for Henry and Delilah are. Henry is new to this job and still has a lot to learn, so you’re often given the ability to radio Delilah to ask about the history of the area, how to use certain tools, or just to chat and keep you company. The ability to communicate with Delilah over the radio also immensely adds to the experience. Instead of mindlessly following an objective marker you have to put in the effort to read the land and figure things out on your own, which makes every new discovery feel earned instead of spoonfed. What I love about this is that it makes finding your way to your next location feel like an achievement in and of itself. You’re never given a waypoint or a shiny arrow pointing you towards your next objective, so you have to pay attention to your map, compass, and radio calls with Delilah to succesfully navigate the area.

One of the things I love the most about this game is the way it handles traversal and exploration. Equipped with nothing more than a map, compass, and some rope, you spend the vast majority of this game exploring the environment for clues, searching for ways to reach new areas, and trying your best to not get turned around or lost yourself. Henry (with the help and guidance of Delilah) is tasked with searching the forests, lakes, and canyons of the surrounding area in an effort to find them. The core mystery of this game is the disappearance of two teenage girls.

With Delilah’s help, Henry begins to adjust to his new life as a fire lookout, although it’s not long before this pleasant change of scenery takes a dark turn. While stationed in a lonely lookout tower in the woods, Henry begins to communicate over the radio with another lookout named Delilah, striking up a new friendship despite being separated by several miles of wilderness. Set in the year 1989, Henry’s life has taken an unexpected and tragic turn, and he hopes that accepting a new job as a fire lookout will give him enough time away from things to reflect and refocus on what his next steps should be. It presents itself as a hiking simulator set in the forests and mountains of Wyoming, but as it slowly pulls back the veil to reveal its true nature, it becomes increasingly clear that the breathtaking scenery hides a dark secret.įirewatch puts players in the hiking boots of a middle-aged man named Henry.
